Scorpion Identification & Prevention
Understanding Scorpions: What You Need to Know
If you put together a list of “creepy, crawly” pests, scorpions would likely be at the top of the list. While living in Texas has many benefits, one drawback is knowing that scorpions live throughout our state.
Scorpions in New Braunfels are predatory arachnids that feed on insects, spiders, and other scorpions. These arachnids play an important role in helping to reduce populations of nuisance insects. Like other arachnids, adults have eight legs, but their most distinguishing features are their segmented tail that curves over the body and two claw-like appendages they use to hold onto their prey.
Are Scorpions Dangerous? Understanding the Risks
The most common species of scorpion living in our area is the striped bark scorpion. Unfortunately for us, they are a species that has venom strong enough to trigger severe allergic reactions in people. Scorpion venom attacks the nervous system and can cause serious health problems that need to be managed by a health professional. Being vigilant and avoiding contact with scorpions is always the best practice.
Identifying the Causes of Your Scorpion Problem
Scorpions become a problem in our yards when they discover that they offer them ample hiding spots, access to water, and plenty of insects to hunt.
Some of their favorite outdoor hiding spots include spaces under rocks, woodpiles, and brush piles. They also hang out behind the bark on trees, on rock walls, and on the exterior walls of our homes.
Things like gardens, standing water, trash cans, and outdoor light fixtures will attract a lot of insect activity. The more insects living in an area, the more predators like scorpions will be around to hunt them.
Where to Find Scorpions: Common Hiding Spots
Scorpions typically live outdoors but use our homes as a respite from extremely hot or dry weather. They know that moving indoors will provide them with safe, cool shelter and, most likely, access to water.
Another reason that scorpions wind up in our homes is after following their insect prey inside. As scorpions hunt their prey, they move indoors through any gaps in the exterior of your home that they come across.
Inside they hide in dark, secluded areas. Doing things like putting on your shoes, getting under the covers in your bed, or reaching into a box stored in the basement could put you into accidental contact with scorpions.
